End of the Year

It's the end of the year and I'm really sad. I did not expect to befriend everyone in my major, but I am glad that I did. Damn, there were definitely some good memories that were made in George Read North (sorry Rodney residents!). I hope that we visit each other throughout summertime, but I know that I cannot wait until next semester even though I am glad the year is over with. I have never taken real art classes before college, but now that I have, I love art even more. My thought process has opened up and I have created some things I am very proud of (some I am not proud of...haha). I cannot even try to describe the best things that have happened this year, let alone this semester. Maybe at a later date, when I become REALLY nostalgic about college, I will describe them to you. But for now, I am just sad to see everything coming to an end. Summer is here and school is out. Everyone have fun and be safe.

Numbers

This is my final project that I finished in Drawing 2. The theme was numbers. When asked what I was passionate about, I could not think of anything to be honest. So then Cody suggested looking at my own life and how numbers are created through my actions. Because I have many things to do everyday, I travel all over New Castle County so I figured I would record, visually, where I went. This piece is the result of my travels throughout two weeks. The tacks represent where I went and the red string records the paths I took. I am very interested in the line composition that occurs as a result of this. I might continue doing some pieces with this idea in mind.

Hope

This is my favorite piece that I did in Drawing 2 this semester. It was a multi-media process piece about emotion. However, Cody Bloom (my graduate teacher) told me to just DRAW whatever you felt. I guess this composition came out from a lot of Hans Zimmer and Miranda Lambert. In my critique I got "blood" and "sewage". But, I'd like to call it Hope. Ink, Pastel, Acrylic, and Newspaper were used as the materials. Hope you like it.

Wrenches Can Be Abstract

These are two drawings I did in the middle of last semester for Dave Brinley. The first is a representational charcoal drawing of a typical wrench and the second one is a totally abstract version of it. I looked closely at the shapes that made up the wrench and went on from there. I researched a lot of Picasso in order to accomplish this effect. Hope you like it!

Old Work!

Here is some of my old photographs that helped me get into the Art Program at UD. Of course these are only some, so if you don't like them, I promise there are many more. If you would like me to do a shoot for you please contact me at smarnold@udel.edu. I haven't done a shoot in so long due to my strenuous work load, but I am open to another. They're so much fun, I promise. :)

Half and Half Project

Here is another project I completed for Design. It is called the Half and Half Project. We had to combine an old or obselete object with a new version of it. The rules could be tweaked a bit, but I stayed with technology for the most part. It can be found in all of my solutions. I personally like the Man Robot the best, but you can choose. I HATE the Horn Megaphone mostly because it is hard to tell that the other half of it is a horn, but Katsi wouldn't let me take a more juxtaposed solution (my solution with house and roots). Oh well...

Self Portrait Abstraction

This is a self-abstraction that I created in my Drawing class. I wanted to try a subtle cubism approach, with simple lines and sharp angles. I think the color is important too. Although the lines are sharp, the color gives in a soft touch, so it looks almost inviting. I know it doesn't look too much like me but I'm hoping the blonde hair gives some indication. :) I had fun with this one. It was an interesting experiment.

Covering Project

For Design, one of our projects was to cover an object with something else. We had to produce two products, one that was covered in a "skin", a continuous object. I decided to cover an axe with ribbon that would change color from green to a maroon. It was a subtle link to blood and a feminine touch on a masculine object. It also seemed to go with my pineapple that I decided to cover in multiple objects (the candy Lemonheads). The result turned out pretty well, creating a pattern all around the shape. I'm glad that I covered the leaves as well, it gives it the effect I was looking for. The Lemonheads give the pineapple a contrast in color, texture, and smell. And...if you were to taste it, a difference in taste.

Cardboard Sculpture

I finished my cardboard sculpture for Design class. I decided to make an iron, for no particular reason really. It is about five time bigger than the original object.  I liked this assignment, just not the length of time we are required to complete it in. Starting off with this project I was so confused and did not know where to start. But, with help from friends, I slowly understood and felt more comfortable with the cardboard. But, the final product is so worth it. Although there is alot I would decide to change (including my object!), I am still proud of the work I put into it. Tomorrow I have the critique on it (I'm crossing my fingers!) The semester is officially over at nine pm for me! YAY!

"The Love Letter"

I completed my stop animation movie for my Digital Media class. Personally, I'm not too fond of it.  Part of it was because I relied on my models to help me and the distance was somewhat of an issue.  But, everything put aside, I did finish it and posted it on YouTube.  It is a story of a boy and girl writing to their dream lovers, and in the end, they bump into each other, and realize that they have been looking for each other.  They walk away in love and together.  Cheesy I know, but it was the best I could do in such little time. 

Semester one of college is ALMOST OVER! It's gonna feel so good to do nothing, but the things I want to do. =] I hope everyone has a good break! Enjoy yourselves!

Wire Sculpture

I finally have been able to upload a picture of my wire sculpture from Design class. It is composed of 16 gauge, black coated, tie wire. This project would seem easy, but it was not.  I wish that I approached it with a more simplistic way (by using one line).  I do not think it looks like myself at all, but I tried my best.  I never worked with wire or made any sculpture before so it was a nice change from the traditional two dimensional work. Cardboard Sculpture is next!

DANG Paper Bags

We are currently drawing paper bag sculpture that we made in drawing class. This is the second one I did (charcoal on 18"x 24" medium drawing paper) . Personally, I like the first one I did (it is much more proportional and compositionally appealing), however, this is the only comp that I could have access to at the moment. Hopefully, the final will be better! HOPEFULLY.

Art for Change

This the poster I created for my Digital Media class.  At the top it says, "Every 20 minutes a child is diagnosed with Autism", and at the bottom, "Be a fighter for a tiny piece of a tiny feeling.  Wonder what it's worth".  It is obviously centered around finding a cure for Autism.  In order to achieve the final product, I drew the puzzle pieces and scanned it onto the computer.  I colored the puzzle pieces in Photoshop.  The text was made in Adobe Illustrator and put into Photoshop.  The yellow halo around the text is a paint splatter brush that I downloaded and I put an inner shadow on it for it to take on an effect.  It is simple but still implies an impact.  I wish I put a website or contact information at the bottom, but I'll know that for next time.

Ellington Robinson

I recently went to the Paul R. Jones Collection at the University of Delaware.  It is very thought provoking, but I found the two artists that struck me the most are Frank Bowling and Ellington Robinson.  Bowling's piece that is featured is called "Boo'sback" and it relates to African American music.  Bowling's work is very similar to Robinson's as well because it focuses on African American music.  I wish I could show the pieces that are featured by Robinson that are in the Collection, but I could not find a photo of it on the Internet (go figure right).  However, I did pull this image off of Google and it is called "No Way Out".  The sky of this is actually cassette tape and he uses different layers of mixed media such as record labels record sleeves to emphasize the musical influence. I think I love his work because it reminds me of Robert Rausenberg's work as well.  I am very interested in the mixed media medium and hope to someday explore that within my own work.

Children Campaign

This was my first Design project this year.  We had to choose a certain object (mine was a bird) and come up with a total of fifteen compositions that represented different ideas. A few ideas include: Emergence of Identity, Crisis in Values, Leisure Time, Child Advocate, and more. I had to think of the last five on my own. Personally I think that this was a very extensive project to be the first one. But, I must admit that it did set the mood for the entire semester. It took about fifteen to twenty hours to do the whole set. The pieces are all different and unique in composition.  They are comprised of colored paper cutouts as well. I only used colored paper, scissors, and glue to create these pieces. They are mounted on 6"x9" Bristol Paper. I am, for the most part, satisfied with the outcome, however I do believe I could have gone farther with the ideas.

Art In Autumn

This is my third project for my Digital Media class. We had to create a concept and use scanned object in order to carry out that concept efficiently.  I took a ClipArt image (tree) from the Internet and used that as my main focus.  I scanned in leaves and transformed them to look as if they were on the ground. I scanned in colored pencils and created a radial effect with multiple layers and lowered the opacity.  The background is composed to a lowered opacity of a photograph of brick and scanned tea stains with lowered opacity.  The "leaves" on the tree are actually small pencil shavings that I also scanned in.  All in all, I think that my final project is a little plain, but simplicity is better.  I am content with the outcome. 

This project was made in Adobe Photoshop.

Robert Rauschenberg

One of my all-time favorite artists and inspirations is Robert Rauschenberg. He mixes screen printing with paint to produce a montage/mixed media effect that is very intriguing. He deals with pop art as well and sometimes focuses on political issues such as JFK. Since he uses many layers in his pieces it can create the effect of texture (which is my favorite way to portray art).  Sadly, he died in 2008, but he contributed so much to the art world. Check out his work, you'll be amazed.

Photo Concepts

These are three shots that I did for my second Digital Media project. The left one produced the concept of Stop Action by using a very high shutter speed to "freeze the motion".  Jordan was my model (kudos to her for doing a job well done. The middle one dealt with Panning (by following the subject at the same pace while the background is blurred). Mittens was my model (kudos to him). This is the best cat in Old New Castle! MEOW! And finally the right photo was a foreground shot. This was taken in Morris Library.

The Grudge Girl

This is the self portrait that I handed in for a Digital Media project. I know, it looks really creepy, sorta like The Grudge girl, but I always wanted to do a shot like this. I think the black and white does it justice. If it was in color it would look so goofy. We also had to have two other shots for our self portrait, but I was not too fond of them myself.

Introduction

Welcome! I noticed that I can only post blog comments on those who have the same blog website as me, so I decided to create a BlogSpot in addition to the DeviantArt blog that I already have.
